Claire Wilson

Claire Wilson

Claire Wilson believes good things take time ... and it's just as well because she figures it has taken her 40 years to finally win the horse grand prix at the Central Hawke's Bay A and P Show.

To be fair, the Waipukurau horsewoman is exaggerating just a tad - she only just turned 40 last week, but this is a show she has been competing at since before she started primary school.

However, the weekend was all hers - aboard McMillan's Tipsey, Wilson was the only one to go clear in the 10-strong class over the Murray Graham (Waipawa) designed course in the Country TV Horse Grand Prix.

The 13-year-old home-bred mare, who is by Voltaire, is a little dynamo - small but with a heart of gold.

"I am just so happy with my little consistent mare," said Wilson, who also has the ride on her husband Simon's McMillan's Clearmont MVNZ until he fully recovers, and Ruth Hone's Shoe Shine Nugget. "That grand prix is one that I have never been able to win ... I have had about four seconds and plenty of other prizes, but never a win, so this is special.

"It's funny how it's the little things that matter."

The first of the double proved problematic for many combinations, but Wilson, who was the last to go, made sure her mare left everything up.

In the Pony Grand Prix Lucy McHugh (Gisborne) and Hawai Haka were the only combination of the 12 starters to go double clear.

Five came through to the jump-off, and while McHugh's round wasn't the fastest, it was the best.
