An elderly woman and her daughter have been left "shocked and upset" after being attacked in their home by two armed men.

Hawke's Bay Police are appealing for help from the public after the aggravated burglary in the Hastings suburb of Akina tonight.

Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard said around 8.15pm the two women were confronted in their home in Outram Rd by two young males.

"These young offenders were disguised and in possession of weapons. The pair demanded money, before a struggle followed," Pritchard said.

The men left on foot. Both women were left shocked and upset but unhurt by the "frightening" incident, he said.

"This was a random and very nasty attack on this family. I am asking the community to help us identify the two responsible."

Locals were being asked to check their properties for discarded clothes as well as a handbag that was stolen from the house.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hawke's Bay Police on (06) 831 0700.
