A 77 year-old man thought he was "goner" during an aggravated robbery that left him with serious injuries.

The man asked Hawke's Bay District Health Board to issue a statement on his behalf, so he could thank the people involved in his care and the neighbours who helped him on the night of the June 25 attack.

The man, who does not want be named, said he was recovering well from the serious injuries.

However, at the time of the attack he had thought he was a "goner".

After the attack he ran to his neighbours for help.
