Let the Art Deco festivities begin.

From today Napier becomes the Art Deco centre of the world and as usual your favourite newspaper, Hawke's Bay Today, is getting into the spirit of things.

As you will have seen, we have changed our masthead on the front page into an Art Deco one. We also have two pages devoted to the annual event today and we plan to have full coverage for the rest of the week.

We think Art Deco Weekend is a wonderful part of our history and deserves to be celebrated as one of our biggest events of the year.

A lot of hard work goes into making the Tremain Art Deco Weekend a success and the credit must go to Sally Jackson and her team at the Art Deco Trust, as well as the Napier City Council and all the volunteers who do such a great job.

Last year's event was a spectacular success and things are looking good for this time as well. After initial fears, the weather is looking like it will play its part.

It is truly amazing how big Art Deco Weekend has become and we have heard of so many people coming from far and wide to participate in the event. We have had stories of people coming from the United States and plenty more from other parts of New Zealand. The more the merrier.

It is good to see that the few remaining Hawke's Bay veterans of the historic D-Day landings of 1944 will be honoured during this Saturday's Art Deco parade through the central city.

There will be a strong military theme to this year's event as it is the 70th year since D-Day, as well as the 75th year since the outbreak of WWII and 100 years since the outbreak of WWI.

So, enjoy yourself. Something tells me that this year's Art Deco Weekend is going to be the best yet.
