Editorial: It takes one bad apple to spoil the fun

Alcohol is often the fuel behind violence.

Too often our reporters are writing stories about people being punched, kicked or even bitten while out trying to enjoy a Saturday night.

And now a popular beauty blogger has come out saying she had a glass smashed on her head by an angry fan.

YouTube video blogger Sally Jo Hickey said she was "rattled" by the unprovoked attack which left her with glass in her hair and her shoe.

Publicans have a tough job at times reining in sometimes rowdy behaviour and making sure their patrons haven't had too much to drink.

There will always be some people who go looking for trouble and some will find it, while others are just in the wrong place at the wrong time - as Miss Hickey was.

Thirsty Whale owner Chris Sullivan had no knowledge of the incident that Miss Hickey claims took place on the bar's deck.

He said Miss Hickey should have informed bar staff or the police - which she did not.

Mr Sullivan even suggested Miss Hickey was "attention-seeking".

I don't know if the attack did or did not happen. Either way, I agree with Labour MP Stuart Nash who said it was not a good look for the region.

Miss Hickey has painted Napier as an unsafe place to go out at night, to her 150,000 followers on YouTube.

I don't frequent the bars along Ahuriri at witching hour very often but the times I have done so I have always felt safe.

However, it takes only one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch.
