Offal spill closes SH2 in Waipawa, road reopens 18 hours later

A major highway in Hawke’s Bay has reopened under stop/go management after animal scraps spilled from a truck on Tuesday evening.

Police were called to the blockage on State Highway 2 in Waipawa about 4.30pm.

The road was reopened 18 hours later, around 10.30am on Wednesday.

“No injuries have been reported, however the road will remain closed while clean up is under way,” a police spokesperson said on Tuesday evening.

The offal spill blocked the highway between Great North Rd and Argyll Rd, police said.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said in a statement the offal had made the road a slippery and dangerous surface and a detour had been put in place while the road was closed.

The clean-up of the offal was still continuing while the road was under stop/go management.
