In contrast to May, there has been little rain so far this month in some parts of the Tararua.

More rain has fallen from Woodville south than in the north of the district, with just 17mm so far in Norsewood.

Last week, the Tararua primary schools' seven-a-side tournament in Pahiatua was cancelled because of bad weather, while Dannevirke and Norsewood basked in sunshine.

"Hand-in-hand with the low June rainfall has been higher temperatures," weather-watcher Lyn McConchie said.

"The grass is still growing well and should stay that way if we get the promised three or four wet days this week."

Having just passed the winter solstice yesterday, daylight hours will start to increase, but yesterday's warm 14C temperature won't be the last, with predictions of 15C today - very balmy for the time of the year.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll said the higher than average daily temperature records are more typical of mid-April than late June.
