Once the scaffolding is in place, the repainting of the exterior walls, roof, and the nearby public toilet block will begin and will take about six weeks.
“During this time, the town hall will remain in use, but there will be some temporary changes around the site to keep everyone safe.”
The spokesperson said the project will give the “much-loved” heritage building a refreshed and protected exterior, with colours selected in line with guidance from Heritage New Zealand.
“The town hall is due for maintenance to protect the building from weathering and keep it looking its best.
“This work is about protecting and preserving one of Dannevirke’s key heritage buildings, helping ensure it remains safe, weather-tight, and looking great for years to come.
They said the hall, which is used for hosting community events, council meetings, theatre performances, and school events, has been maintained through a planned programme that focuses on value for money.
“Repainting is done when it will best protect the building and extend its life, rather than on a fixed cycle.
“The timing now means we can prevent more costly repairs later and get the best return for ratepayers.”
The road behind the hall (between McPhee St and Allardice St) will be closed while scaffolding work and painting is underway.
The public carpark will remain open, with only a small number of parks unavailable. Access from High St will stay the same.
The High St frontage of the town hall will stay open for pedestrians.
Dannevirke Town Hall bookings will continue as normal.
