Voters in the south ward could find themselves in a unique position after October's local body elections.

With Tracey Collis, Shirley Hull, Peter Johns and Andy Thompson nominated for the four Tararua District Council seats in the south ward, there is no need for an election for voters south from Woodville to Eketahuna.

However, with two of the four south ward candidates, Shirley Hull and Tracey Collis, also in the Tararua mayoralty race, if either wins the mayoral vote, there would need to be a by-election if more than one person was nominated to fill the vacancy that would leave. "I can't recall a by-election before here under those circumstances," council governance manager Richard Taylor said.

"We've had the situation previously where councillors have been elected unopposed. This time it could be different with a by-election possible, depending on the mayoral result."

But with 10 people standing for the four north ward seats around the council table and three; Allan Benbow, Ernie Christison and Kay McKenzie, also seeking the mayoral position, voters will have plenty of decisions to make.

Eighteen people have been nominated for seven places on the MidCentral District Health Board, with the "at large" vote held under the Single Transferable Vote system.
