Lucas Duross spearheaded a Napier Harriers trifecta in the senior men's division of the Hawke's Bay Gisborne crosscountry championship in Gisborne on Saturday.
In a close 10km race Duross held off Kristian Day by one second with a time of 38m17s. Campbell MacDonald was third in 46m31s.
Napier's Ruby Muirwon the senior women's 10km race in 42m37s. Her clubmate and North Island champion Laura Nagel withdrew from the champs with an injury. Duross, Day, Muir and Nagel have been selected for the national cross country champs in Auckland on August 7.
Gisborne's Steve Morrow won the men's masters 8km race in 32m31s. Phil McKay of Hastings was second in 35m03s and Napier's Craig Mathers third in 36m 07s.
It was a Gisborne trifecta in the women's masters 6km race. Nadine McKinnon won in 30m45s and was followed by Katie Edwards and Nicole Iremonger.
There was another Napier trifecta in the under-18 boys 6km race, all of whom were first year runners. William Little won in 24m54s, Ronan Lee was 28s behind and Alex Langley third in 27m31s.
Gisborne's Briana Irving, one of the top 14-year-olds in the country, won her 4km race in 16m38s. Napier's Alia Wentz was second in 18m37s and Ruby Brett of Hastings third in 19m49s.
Ollie Marshall and Jonathon Moore produced a Napier quinella in the boys 14 and under 4km race. Their respective times were 15m54s and 19m36s.
Gisborne's Chloe Kapene won the 12 years girls 2km race in 9m16s followed by Napier's Stella Marshall who was 10s behind. Gisborne's Tui Ruiflok was third in 9m39s. In the boys 12s 2km race Charlie Roil from Hastings continued his good form to win in 8m28s from Napier's Harry Brenton-Rule in 8m40s. Napier's Oliver Berry had a close tussle with Brenton-Rule and finished two seconds behind him in third place.
