Winning the toss is all good in cricket but for captains it can also be a case of be careful what you wish for.

Bayleys Real Estate Havelock North and Heretaunga Building Society Cornwall won tosses but probably wished they hadn't bowled and batted, respectively, on Saturday in the Property Brokers 50-over competition.

The villagers slumped to a 165-run defeat to Ruahine Motors Central Hawke's Bay at Forest Gate Domain, Ongaonga.

No3 James Mackie scored 157 runs, including 20 fours and a six, while opener Toby Richardson fell nine runs shy of a century in the hosts' 318-5 in 50 overs.

Cornwall must rue their decision to bat after they were skittled for 203 in 43.1 overs before The Station Napier Old Boys' Marist (NOBM) chased down the total in 32.1 overs for an eight-wicket victory.

Opener Jake Harvey scored 71 for the hosts, while Brendan Quinn took 5-47.

NOBM opener Jesse Singh was unbeaten on 102 from 85 balls, including a dozen boundaries and three sixes.

Jack Ward added a solid 70 from 82 balls.

Complete Flooring Napier Technical Old Boys (NTOB) were the only side to win a toss and the game, beating Sharpies Driving Range Taradale by eight wickets at Nelson Park, Napier.

The visitors scored an anaemic - by T20 standards - 80 in 26.3 overs with just two players in double figures but below 20 runs.

NTOB seamer Liam Rukuwai took 5-23, including four maidens, while fellow opener Christian Leopard took 4-23, including three maidens.

The hosts needed 8.3 overs to eclipse the target with 84-2 as No4 Indika Senarathne set the platform with 53 not out.
