A house is believed to be on fire on Napier Hill.

National fire communications shift manager Murray Dunbar said they recieved multiple calls about the blaze and there were four fire trucks at the scene.

Mr Dunbar said early reports suggest it is a villa fire on Cameron Rd.

This comes just hours after fire crews were called to a blaze at a vacant building behind Storty Bar in Hastings this morning.

Two crews were sent out at 7.40am after reports of smoke in the area, Central Fire Communications shift manager Carlos Dempsey said.

One witness described a rubbery smell coming from the building and thick black smoke.

The fire crews worked to bring the fire under control and kept it contained from nearby buildings, Mr Dempsey said.

Heretaunga St was closed and police were called in to manage traffic.

Hastings senior station officer Mike Peachey said it was unknown at this stage what caused the blaze.

The fire was doused within 20 minutes of the response, Mr Peachey said.
