There are 71 new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand. The 71 cases are made up of 49 new confirmed cases and 22 new probable cases. It brings the total to 868 cases in New Zealand since the pandemic began.

Hawke's Bay has five new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total in the region to 24, with a nationally significant cluster now emerging from Napier.

Two of those reported today are confirmed cases, with three further probable cases.

The nationwide total is now 868, with 71 new cases across NZ.

Medical Officer of Health Nick Jones said the two new cases, people in their 50s, had returned from overseas.

The three probable cases are a child, who was a close household contact of a previously confirmed case, and two residents in the dementia ward at Gladys Mary Care Home in Napier, where there are already three other cases.

The Ministry of Health said a cluster related to the docking of the Ruby Princess cruise ship in Napier had now 13 cases, making it one of 10 significant clusters in NZ.

That cluster includes people who likely caught the disease in Napier, but are receiving healthcare in another NZ region.

Jones said none of the five new cases in Hawke's Bay required additional medical assistance at this stage.

He said Hawke's Bay DHB was working closely with Bupa, the owners of the care home.

"We have been reassured by Bupa that they have been able to maintain their high standards of care for their residents, during this time," he said.

Covid-19 symptoms include a cough, high temperature, runny nose, sneezing or shortness of breath.
