Hastings district councillors poised for this weekend's marathon are George Lyons (left), Tania Kerr, Sandra Hazlehurst and Cynthia Bowers.

The councillors are ready to rumble, as the day of the inaugural Air New Zealand Hawke's Bay International Marathon nears.

Hastings district councillors George Lyons, Tania Kerr, Sandra Hazlehurst and Cynthia Bowers will join the 4950 entrants who will walk and run all or part of the 42 kilometres this Saturday.

Of those entrants, just over 1100 are from Hawke's Bay, more than 3500-plus are from across the rest of New Zealand and 240 are heading to the Bay from abroad, principally Australia, China and Hong Kong.

It is the perfect time to show off Hawke's Bay to a lot of visitors who will likely not have been to the area before, said Mrs Bowers.

"Many of our runners will bring a friend for support, so potentially we have about 8000 people who will be enjoying our scenery and our hospitality, and hopefully our gorgeous weather."
