Hawke's Bay Today's Bring Yer Boots campaign is humming along nicely, with footy boots and sports shoes coming in for children who will need them this winter.

But there is a long way to go to match last year's haul of more than 800 pairs. Hawke's Bay Today has teamed up with Sport Hawke's Bay to ensure children who would not be able to play sport because they do not have boots will be able to.

This year, readers are being asked to donate running or sports shoes as well. Hawke's Bay Today editor Andrew Austin said the campaign was a way for the paper to help those in need.

"Last year we were able to bring joy to a number of less fortunate children in our communities, thanks to the generosity of our readers."

Sport Hawke's Bay commercial manager Kevin Murphy said he supported the recycling push because he often saw talented young sportspeople struggling to keep up with the financial demands of buying new boots.

"Most families I know have more than one child playing, so the youngest child may not get new boots often," Mr Murphy said.

"Recycling is well worth the exercise as children's sizes change so quickly when they are growing."
