A record turnout marked the bigger-than-ever 100th Central Hawke's Bay A & P Show at the weekend.

The special four-day centenary event was extended to Sunday and attracted the largest crowds ever, CHB A & P Association president Larry White said.

"The gate takings are certainly up on previous years and the crowd was huge," he said.

"Talking to people who have been associated with the show for a long time said it was the biggest crowd they had ever seen."

Mr White said extra entertainment was organised for the show, including terrier and lawnmower races, a wool show and a Top Town competition.

"We also had a bigger gourmet wine and food section and that was very well received."

The event took 12 months to plan and was such a milestone, a book was written in the centenary's honour, Mr White said.

"Without everyone involved, we just couldn't do it - the sponsors, members and the public.

"It was some of the best days I have seen there."
