Police would not confirm how the accident occurred.
It's the third time trains and vehicles have collided in the Hawke's Bay region this year.
A train and a truck-and-trailer unit collided on Hardinge Rd in Ahuriri, Napier on May 3.
The crash occurred in the late morning and no one was injured.
In June, a young driver had a lucky escape after his car stalled on the train tracks on Awatoto Rd.
Senior Constable Brian Farquharson said the driver was distracted by the heavy rain and windy conditions.
"He's pulled left into Waitangi Rd to go across it and crashed into the barrier arm - he didn't see the red lights flashing," Farquharson said.
"He stalled the car, looked to the right and didn't see anything coming, then looked to the left, then sees this big light approaching rather rapidly."
