There will be no Tararua sports awards this year as the event moves to become biennial, with the next one in 2018. Over the past 16 years the annual Tararua sports awards event has recognised the achievements of coaches, officials, administrators and sportspeople from the Tararua District.

The awards have celebrated many local, national, and international successes.
But after a review of last year's event, talks between the Tararua District Council and Sport Manawatu have seen the awards move to a biennial event; with the next awards scheduled for April 2018.

Sport Manawatu Tararua recreation adviser Natarsha Nikora said this strategic shift was to enable the two organisations to re-allocate funding and resources to a proposed new community participation event, planned to run in the years between the awards with the first event scheduled for April next year. Miss Nikora said the organisations were looking at potential ideas, with the intention to create a family-friendly event which will also cater to the needs of competitive participants.
