SH2 near Takapau wasn't expected to reopen until 'late morning'.

One person is in a critical condition after a truck and car crash that closed State Highway 2 near Takapau in Central Hawke’s Bay for close to eight hours.

NZTA said the road between Maharakeke Rd and Fraser Rd reopened about 11.50am on Monday. They were called to the crash near Speedy Rd, just before 4am.

The Serious Crash Unit was on site and a heavy vehicle crane was being brought to the site of the crash to help with the clean up.

A detour was put in place and drivers asked to follow the directions of emergency services and allow extra time for travel.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one rapid response unit and one ambulance responded at 3.58am.
