A man in his 70s has serious injuries after being hit by a car in Taradale.

Emergency services responded to the scene at 9.10am on Pembroke St near the intersection of Meeanee Rd.

The man was on Tuesday afternoon in a serious condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Police staff remained at the scene for two hours, setting up a diversion that blocked Pembroke St and diverted any traffic down through Guppy Rd.

The cordons they had set up at Guppy and Meeanee Rd, Guppy and Cornwall Rd and Meeanee Rd and King St, were lifted at 11.30am.
