Car hit by train near Waipukurau, Central Hawke's Bay

A car driver was lucky to escape injury after the car was hit by a train in Central Hawke's Bay.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Hatuma Rd, Hatuma, just south of Settlement Rd, about 8.10am on Monday.

Police said a vehicle had collided with a train.

Nobody was injured during the crash and there were no blockages, according to a police spokeswoman.

Raewyn Hastie, who lives opposite the site of the crash, said while unaware of the cause of the crash, the warnings are clear.

"It's a really sharp corner, but there are three signs before you get to the tracks – they say 'railway crossing', 'stop' and 'look for trains'," she said.

"There aren't barriers, but it's clearly sign posted both sides."

Hastie said this was the sixth accident outside their property in two years – but the first time a vehicle had been hit by a train.

"One car rolled into our garden and another hit a tree out the front," she said. "Many a time we've seen cars trying to race trying to get across the line before the train and that's when you hear them toot like anything."

Hastie said the train was stationary for about three hours.
