While Burley Kitchens and Cabinetry has been operating under that name for just 18 months it has more than 30 years of design and workmanship behind it - having previously been Garry Nugent Joinery, which Mr Nugent set up in 1983.
In 2007, under the name and management of Mr Nugent, the company picked up the Best Kitchen and Supreme Award at the national presentations.
Mr Nugent is still involved in joinery, but in a part-time capacity in an overall set-up which is described as a "succession plan".
Mr Burley had been a joiner and cabinetmaker with Garry Nugent Joinery for 23 years before the re-brand, and the move from long-term employee to owner-operator and managing director.
He paid tribute to Mr Nugent and the six staff currently on the books.
"We have concentrated on complete customer satisfaction as well as constantly working on putting new ideas in front of clients and coming up with a point of difference."
Mr Burley said the industry was a highly competitive one and the category they topped was a major part of it.
"So we must be doing something right," he laughed.
As well as taking on regional work the company had also recently wrapped up jobs in Greytown, Whanganui and Taupo.
A spokesman for the judges at this year's awards said the standard was high over a record number of entries.
"This competition has shown that winners can come from all-sized projects."
