A new community group on Facebook is bringing smiles to Hawke's Bay.
A new community group works on the belief that actions speak louder than words.
You made my day - Hawke's Bay is a place where people can do something to brighten the lives of others - no matter how big or small.
The Facebook group attracted 160 members overnight and500 since it was created on Friday.
Offers ranged from boutique accommodation for a couple in desperate need of a getaway and lunch for two "hard-working mums" to a batch of cookies or posy of violets.
Everyone who donates does so from the heart, for no commercial gain. Creator Silke Whittaker was inspired by a Gamechanger Live workshop that gave her an insight into issues faced by people from all walks of life.
"No matter where you come from, no matter your position everyone has their own battles," she said. "I wanted to create a place for people to engage before they turn to suicide or drugs or get sick."
She wanted to make it clear You made my day is not a charity but a space to spread positivity, bringing people out of isolation and lifting them up. "We have had quite a few big offers but I would encourage people to do little things too, like a bunch of flowers or taking an old lady out for a cup of tea."
People could either nominate themselves in a comment section or somebody they think could do with a treat. Her vision is to have You made my day groups in all 28 regions throughout New Zealand. Mrs Whittaker is looking for volunteers to get other areas started.
