"No matter where you come from, no matter your position everyone has their own battles," she said. "I wanted to create a place for people to engage before they turn to suicide or drugs or get sick."
She wanted to make it clear You made my day is not a charity but a space to spread positivity, bringing people out of isolation and lifting them up. "We have had quite a few big offers but I would encourage people to do little things too, like a bunch of flowers or taking an old lady out for a cup of tea."
People could either nominate themselves in a comment section or somebody they think could do with a treat. Her vision is to have You made my day groups in all 28 regions throughout New Zealand. Mrs Whittaker is looking for volunteers to get other areas started.
