The Waitangi Bridge over the Tutaekuri River, between Clive and Awatoto.

The Waitangi Bridge over the Tutaekuri River, between Clive and Awatoto.

The Waitangi Bridge on SH2 at Awatoto will be closed to night traffic for about a week to allow contractors to install a section of cycleway as part of a new section being built between it and the Ngaruroro Bridge.

Contractors have been at work for the past few weeks and, while there were no traffic delays created, the highway shoulder had been closed off.

New Zealand Transport Agency journey manager for Napier Oliver Postings said the date for the night closures was still to be set but it would be about mid-June.

Work on upgrading the Ahuriri Estuary Bridge on the SH2B Expressway was wrapped up last weekend.

Mr Postings said staff appreciated the patience of drivers who had experienced frustrating delays at times.

He said the work had been complex and contractors had worked tirelessly to get it completed as quickly as they could so as to minimise disruption.

"We have listened to the many complaints and comments about the work and will use these to change the way we manage these works in future."

As that job was wrapped up work began on repairs to the Ohinepaka Stream Bridge and rail overbridge on SH2 just west of Wairoa.

Speed restrictions are in place as well as temporary traffic signals and motorists can expect to add about five minutes to their journey time.

There are also likely to be delays on the north side of the Mohaka Hill and at the Mohaka River viaduct as seal widening and repair work takes place.

Seal repairs are also under way at various sites along SH2 north between Napier and Wairoa.

On SH5 between Napier and Taupo safety barrier installation and water-blasting to remove excess bitumen is being carried out at various sites along the stretch with temporary speed restrictions in place.
