When Amrit Singh arrived as a youngster with his family from India to Napier he led a life of a recluse.

"I could hardly speak in English and I was quite shy so dad took me to a gym," says the 26-year-old of his father, Balbir Singh, a restaurateur, who hails from Rajasthan, who took him to Napier Boxing Gym, the base of then trainer Rod Langdon.

The then 10-year-old knew nothing about the code, let alone lacing up a pair of gloves.

But it was a Mike Tyson bout on the telly that one day took his fancy.

"I thought I could box like Mike Tyson but, of course, I'm nothing like him," he says with a grin.

Singh will fight in the Open elite 75kg category bout against Zane Hoole, of Patutahi, in 3 x 3-minute rounds in The Fruit Shop-sponsored Hastings Boxing Academy amateur promotion at the Hastings Intermediate School today.

Twenty-three bouts on the card beckon pugilists from Hastings, Napier, Flaxmere, CHB, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata, Gisborne, Porirua, Kapiti, Feilding and Otago clubs.

The Hastings gym's intention is to stage as many promotions as it can to return Hawke's Bay boxing to an elite status in the hope of hosting the 2018 National Championship.

However, Singh will not be part of it as the manager of a Napier liquor outlet intends to turn professional after his outing as an amateur at his maiden nationals in July in Rotorua.

"I'm a heavy puncher so Rod Langdon reckons pro fights will suit me better."

Langdon's son-in-law, Ryan Whittaker, trains Singh as an amateur but on turning pro he will go back to the former who only trains pros nowadays since retiring from amateurs and handing the reins over to Whittaker.

"A good lad", Langdon recalls him turning up with a group of peers in his early teens before sparring with Napier professional boxer Beau O'Brien who went on to win the NZ light middleweight belt.

"Amrit's delaying turning pro because he's never been to a New Zealand amateur champs before," he says.

A former Napier Intermediate and Napier Boys' High School pupil, Singh has 19 wins from 36 fights.

His first amateur fight was in 2009 when he fought an Aucklander in Taupo, losing by an agonising point in 3 x 2min rounds but he came out wiser for it.

"I needed to improve my fitness a bit more and learn to keep my hands up because once you get tired your guard drops and you move a little slower," says the bloke who frequents the gym up to six times a week.

In his second amateur career fight, Singh took on a Hamiltonian in New Plymouth in another 3 x 2min bout.

"I jumped on him straight away because I was faster and fitter so I came away with a points decision."

The fighter, who packs in 20 hours of training a week before and after work, went on to win the Golden Gloves in Rotorua in the 69kg novice division.

"I believe in myself and I'm a hard working person.

"I'm a short guy so I work a lot on my body punching," says Singh whose other highlight was beating a two-time middleweight national champion in the Central North island meeting in Rotorua in 2014.

His opponent gives him a kilogramme today in the 75kg bout.

His father is proud of his achievements although he has never watched him fight.

"I don't tell him because it'll only put extra pressure on him," he says but suspects his father will one day see him display his ringcraft.

His mother, Gurbaksh, doesn't like boxing because of the cuts and bruises he's picked up over the years.
