It's just as well Hawke's Bay bowler Colleen Ferrick will be representing two clubs when she takes to the greens during five of the next six days.

Ferrick, who is a member of the Taradale and Heretaunga clubs would have run out of club shirts, had she been a one-club player.

A 1994 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in Canada, Ferrick, 72, will skip the Heretaunga pair in the Central Region division one playoffs of the Bowls New Zealand inter-regional sevens at Bowls Napier today.

She will be one of 112 bowlers in that event.

Tomorrow Ferrick will play three in a Taradale four on day one of the national club championship Central Region playoffs at the same venue.

On Monday it will be back into a Heretaunga shirt for the triples segment of the national club championship playoffs. Tuesday will be a day off for Ferrick, but on Wednesday she will represent Taradale in the singles and on Thursday she will join hubby, Bruce, in Taradale colours as Hawke's Bay representatives in the national 2-4-2 mixed pairs championship playoffs, an event they won 30 years ago.

"I'll be busy but there will be busier players ... Ian Monaghan, of Masterton, will be playing on all six days," Ferrick said.

The difference between Ferrick and Monaghan is Ferrick will be just as busy off the greens as she will be on them.

The mother of two and grandmother of two looks after the Bowls Hawke's Bay website and Facebook pages and is in the early stages of becoming an umpire. "Learning to umpire involves 10 two-hour lessons each week and at least four hours homework each week ... it's tough," Ferrick said.

When it was suggested her foray into umpiring maybe a sign her playing days are about to end 35 years after they began Ferrick replied: "No I'm happy to mix playing and umpiring. I want to do my share of the umpiring and as long as the body allows me I will continue to keep playing."

A former hockey player and swimmer, Ferrick, walks six kilometres each day with her husband.

Maintaining their 8ha lifestyle block at Matapiro also keeps them fit.

Ferrick had to win Hawke's Bay centre titles in her respective events to qualify for the coming week's play. Despite her success at centre level she declined to offer predictions on where she will finish.

"That would be like a kiss of death," she said.

However, Ferrick wasted little time with predictions for some of the other Hawke's Bay combinations.

"If I was a betting person my money would be on the Napier women doing well in division two of the interclub sevens. The Heretaunga men will be hard to beat in division two and on their home turf look out for the Napier men in division one."

She was also quick to point out she was far from the oldest player in action.

One of her long-time friends, Bev Budd from the Terrace End club in Palmerston North, at 84 will have that honour.

"Bowls is a game for all ages ... older players can compete with the younger ones."

Another indication Ferrick is still among the Bay's best is the fact she has been selected as the two in the Bay four for the national inter-centre tournament in Wellington later this month. That selection alone suggests she should be close to a win or two during the coming days.

Regardless of what she achieves during the coming month Ferrick's bowling career highlight, the Commonwealth bronze, is unlikely to be bettered.

"I was the unknown among that New Zealand bowls team which includes Millie Khan, Gary Lawson, Peter Bellis, Rowan Brassey and Phil Skoglund."

Ferrick played two in an Adrienne Lambert-skipped four which included current Bowls New Zealand president Anne Muir at three and Marlene Castle at lead. Such are glory days for a Hawke's Bay bowler doing more than her fair share on and off the greens.
