A body has been found on a Napier beach tonight.

Emergency services were called to the beach adjacent to the former Winstone Aggregates site on State Highway 2, Awatoto, Napier, at 8.35pm.

A police spokesperson said a body had been found on the beach by a member of the public about 8.15pm.

"Police are working to determine the identity and circumstances behind it."

She could not confirm whether there was link between this incident and the missing French tourist who was last seen in Haumoana a week ago.

"We're working through all relevant inquiries."

At least 10 emergency service crew members attended including police and fire as well as at least two fire engines and four police cars.

No further information was available last night.

Police have spent the week looking for French tourist Pierre-Antoine Paludet who was believed to have arrived at Haumoana on January 10 and parked his car near the river mouth.

Police plan to set up a base in the Haumoana Domain on Sunday to try to get more information from the public about the missing tourist.

He slept in the vehicle and cooked nearby, but has not been since about 6.30pm on the Friday two days after his arrival.

Locals became concerned after they noticed rubbish gathering around the vehicle, which appeared to have been abandoned.

The 32-year-old's belongings appeared to still be inside.

Searches, including in and around the domain and an aerial search last Sunday, along with appeals for sightings and information about Mr Paludet's movements, have yielded little.

Police were yesterday urging anyone who had seen or spoken with Mr Paludet, seen his blue and silver station-wagon or has any information which could assist the inquiry to contact them at Haumoana on Sunday.

Alternatively contact a police station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Mr Paludet was thought to have been in New Zealand on two trips in the past year, most recently for about two months during which he travelled to Hawke's Bay from the South Island.

From Vallet in the Nantes region of France, he worked last year in the kiwifruit industry in the Bay of Plenty, and was well-travelled.

Police said they continued to liaise with Mr Paludet's family who were increasingly worried.

They said his lack of contact with them was "completely" out of character.
