The bodies of a male and a female have been found in a car near the Mohaka River today.

Emergency services are on the scene and it's understood the car was situated near Mangatutu Hot Springs, about 80 kilometres north west of Napier, where the bodies were discovered about midday.

Detective Inspector Mike Foster said a male and female had been found dead at the scene today. Their deaths were not suspicious, he said.

A spokesperson said police had been called to the incident at Makahu Rd at 11.37am.

There are no suspicious circumstances and the matter has been referred to the Coroner, the spokeswoman said.

The Mangatutu Hot Springs are at the end of Puketitiri Rd, a gravel road on the edge of Kaweka Forest Park.

It takes an hour or more to drive to the remote springs, with vehicles having to ford a river on the way.

The Department of Conservation owns a free campsite near the hot springs. It's a popular spot for picnics and trout fishing as well as a starting point for hikes in the forest.
