Bikes and rods hit the road for Birthright

There is always a good gathering of bikes at the annual Hawke's Bay Toy Run for Birthright.

More than 200 motorcycles and an estimated 50 hot rods are expected to hit the Hawke's Bay roads on Sunday to raise money, and gather up gifts, for Birthright.

They will be taking part in the 30th anniversary of the annual Toy Run which will set out from Plunket St in Stortford Lodge at 11am, run through Havelock North and Clive, into Napier and finish at Anderson Park in Greenmeadows.

Birthright Hawke's Bay Child and Family Care chief executive Trevor Adsett said they had invited the HB Classic Motorcycle Club, Ulysses Motorcycle Club and Eastside Street Rods to take part in the "motorcade".

"So it is going to be a great event."

He said the entry fee was simple - a toy for kids up to age 17 which would then be gift-wrapped and delivered to families they worked with in the lead-up to Christmas.

"Sometimes it is the only Christmas present these children receive."

Birthright is a non-profit charity which provides social services and assistance for more than 750 less fortunate families in the community.

At the end of the ride and drive the vehicles would all line up at Anderson Park and go on show for people to have a look at.

There would also be sausage sizzles, face painting and lolly scrambles for the kids.
