Animal-lovers donned their best Glamourpuss attire for an inaugural ball and auction which raised $20,000 for Napier and Hastings SPCAs.

People flocked to Napier War Memorial Conference Centre on Saturday for an evening of great food, local wines and dancing, followed by a successful auction. Bidders took home anything from a getaway to Tonga to a tug boat ride in Napier harbour and an All Blacks jersey signed by Dan Carter, which was snapped up for a cool $1100.

"It was an awesome night, absolutely fantastic, the auction items alone raised $16,000 some people got some great bargains. Everyone was so supportive, particularly as we are heading into kitten season," organiser Faye Johnson said.

All funds raised will go towards vet fees - every animal at the shelter is vet checked at least twice, vaccinated, given any treatment it might need, de-sexed, de-flead and wormed before being put up for adoption.

The SPCA doesn't get any government funding, lotteries grants or help from head office, meaning they are entirely supported by fundraising efforts involving the community.

"Our costs per animal are up there, and they aren't covered by adoption fees," Ms Johnson said. Guests were treated to a dinner and wine donated by Sileni Estates, Tironui Estate and Sacred Hill Wine Company.

Kevin Waggs from More FM and Harcourts' Kim Shannon offered some comic relief in their roles as MC and auctioneer throughout the evening.

The event went off without a hitch and organisers hoped to make it an annual occurrence.

"We had a lot of people say how fantastic it was and asking if we will run it again next year." It could be held in mid-winter.
