A car crash has ruptured a gas line near Burger Fuel in Hastings.

The gas leak occurred at a building on the Heretaunga Street West and Charles Street intersection after a mains line was ruptured.

It's understood the incident happened about 12.30 pm.

An employee at a nearby business said he could smell the gas but they were not evacuated.

A police spokeswoman said police were at the scene talking to the driver and traffic was being diverted from the area at that time. There were no reports of injuries.
