Police spikes ended a chase through Hastings just after a "vehicle of interest" failed to stop just after a NZ-wide lockdown was brought into force.

A police spokeswoman said the vehicle failed to stop about 12.47am on Murdoch Road East, Hastings.

The vehicle was brought to a stop after nearly five kilometres, on Omahu Rd.

"Police laid spikes and the vehicle was brought to a stop on Omahu Road about 12.53am, and the occupant arrested," she said.

A 34-year-old man was due to appear in Hastings District Court on Thursday on several charges including failing to stop, driving while disqualified, reckless driving, resisting police, and existing warrants.
