A racing stock car was damaged in a garage fire in Napier on Friday tonight.

Two appliances from Napier Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a fire at Nuffield Ave, Marewa, at about 5.10pm.

Napier station officer Warrick Le Quesne said by the time fire crews arrived some gas cylinders inside the garage had been removed by occupants.

While people should never go into a fire having the gas cylinders removed made it safer for the firefighters.

"We don't want people to go into fires."

They were removed by the occupants of the house while the fire was very little, he said.

A stock car inside the garage was badly damaged and so was the garage itself.

The fire was not near the house on the property and no-one was injured.

An investigation had been completed and the blaze was not thought to be suspicious.

Fire crews were at the address for about an hours.
