One of the organisers Olivia Campbell said while many of the girls grew up playing hockey with Tahl, some had not played in years - meaning the emphasis was more on having fun.
"We weren't doing it for the competition, we were doing it for Tahl," she said, adding Tahl's mother said her daughter would have been "absolutely stoked" with the tribute.
To raise money for Ms Morris, there was a gold coin donation and raffle drawn at the game - with those who attended raising around $700.
"People just felt the need to support Helen," she said. "Through all the years I played reps with Tahl, she [Helen] was the fundraiser, she helped everyone else out.
"We were doing it for Tahl, but we were also doing it for her [Helen].
Ms Campbell said Ms Morris had been very grateful, and when she received the money "she was in tears of happiness".
"She didn't even realise how much of an impact Tahl had, it was good for her to see she'd made an impact on so many lives."
It had also been good for her friends, and the hockey community to gather and remember the 18-year-old, Ms Campbell said, so much so they were thinking about making the hockey tribute an annual event.
Like many of Tahl's friends, Hannah Mason had played hockey with her since primary school and first heard the news while she was in Dunedin studying at the University of Otago.
"A group of us got together and it was pretty intense. It was quite a horrible evening," she said.
"She was a very determined spirit. She loved the game, she was a very passionate player and confident both in and out of hockey."
Ms Mason said the tribute was about giving back to Tahl's mother, who had "done so much for so many of us girls through hockey".
"Tahl was her world, she was everything to her. It was just the two of them and they took on everything together so it's been a pretty tough time."
Tahl was killed after her car collided with a truck on Farndon Rd near Clive just after 5.20pm on Wednesday, March 15.
Emergency services were called but Tahl, the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.
