The Wakely's are having a family affair at the Mitre 10 Mega Walk on Sunday as they want to give back to the cause that has given them so much.

Lochie Wakely was diagnosed with cancer when he was just four years old and when he reached 13 he joined CanTeen.

Mother, Jude Wakely, said Lochie had missed out on socialising with peers his own age aftering spending a lot of time in hospital and CanTeen has given that back.

"They have given him a network of friends who are his own age and who have gone through similar experiences. He has made some life-changing friendships it has been amazing."

Mrs Wakely said the charity organises social events monthly, which allows the members to do everything from paintball and go-karting to camps away.

"Lochie went on an RnR camp, which allowed them all to be themselves and relax for a few days while playing PlayStation and socialising with one another."

Lochie said CanTeen has allowed him to do "normal teenage stuff".

"We do lots of games around Hawke's Bay and they have been so supportive to me and my family with everything."

Lochie will be helping at the finish line with his younger sister, Emily, while Mrs Wakely is doing the 15 kilometre route and Lochie's two other sisters are doing the 3.5km route.

"It is a real family affair, but we want to give back as we know how important they are. They were there for us, so we are there for them."

Mitre 10 Mega advertising and events co-ordinator, Pip George, said the event was well on track with about 520 people already registered.

"The majority will come through either today or tomorrow, as people wait for the weather but so far we are pretty happy with how many we have to date."

The event begins at 7.30am with the 28km mega walk and run and ends at 12.30pm with a prize giving.

The three other categories are a 15km run or walk, 6.5km run or walk, and a 3.5km run or walk.

The entry fees are $20 for adults, $10 for children under 15 and adults over 65, and free for under-5s. People can also buy a family pass, which is two adults and two children for $40 or teams of four for $40.

Buses to and from the event are $3.
