A Wairoa man has been arrested and charged with a raft of serious domestic violence offences.

Police were called to a Wairoa address in the early hours of Sunday morning when matters came to a head between the man and his ex-girlfriend after an altercation.

Police launched an investigation and uncovered three years of alleged violence towards the complainant.

Police executed a number of search warrants at addresses around Wairoa and located evidential items connected with the alleged offending, including a firearm and a number of conventional weapons.

The 46-year-old unemployed man appeared in the Gisborne District Court yesterday and faced 18 charges.

They included, two counts of kidnapping, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of offensive weapons, threatening to kill, assault with a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and assault with intent to injure.

Police take all instances of family violence seriously and offenders could expect a stern response to any offending detected by them.

The man was remanded in custody to appear in the High Court at Gisborne on September 29.
