A Hastings man has been charged with allegedly beating his baby girl leaving her critically injured.
Tuhi Terrence Wiremu Kunaiti, 29, was arrested on Sunday at a Waitara address, a Hawke's Bay police spokesman said.
The family had been in Taranaki for a gathering, it has been reported.
The one-month old was rushed to hospital on Friday with bleeding in her brain after allegedly being beaten by her father.
She is currently in Auckland's Starship Hospital.
Her father was charged with injuring with intent to injure, wounding with reckless disregard and breaching a protection order. He will reappear in court next month.
The child's mother and other family members are reported by Stuff.co.nz to have taken the baby, who was born on October 7, to the Waitara Medical Centre and left her there.
The baby was then taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in a serious condition before being transferred to Starship Hospital.
She is now in a stable condition and expected to be transferred to a regional hospital later this week.
