A bit of patience in the fishing industry has led to a conservative relaxation of commercial catch limits for crayfish on the Hawke's Bay coast.
The limit for the year in the fishing region of Hawke's Bay and Wellington will increase 8 per cent, from 610.625 tonnes to 661.9 tonnes, the only region where an increase has been allowed.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Phil Heatley said commercial fishers had taken a responsible approach to managing the fishery over several years by significantly reducing their catch to halt declining lobster numbers.
Recreational fishing groups had also "done their bit" by voluntarily reducing their daily bag limit.
Patience pays off for fishers
