He's a familiar face on the popular British television series Antiques Roadshow, and is appearing in Havelock North today.
John Benjamin will present an evening lecture and half study day in Havelock North, hosted by The Arts Society Hawke's Bay.
The independent jewellery historian, valuer and author specialises in lecturing and conducting events on a wide range of jewellery topics, holding the attention of many enthusiastic television fans.
Benjamin was delighted when he asked to conduct a lecture in leafy Havelock North.
"I have never been to New Zealand before and have wanted to go since I was a boy. I suppose for many Brits, it represents the ultimate destination and I'm no exception."
He will deliver a total of eight lectures and four study days.
The local Half Study Day is from 9am-12pm at the Havelock North Function Centre on Monday, where he will examine 400 years of international jewellery design - from the pomp of High Renaissance enamelled gold work to the glamour of Harry Winston diamonds. It will also cover a range of topics from diamond cutting, Neoclassicism, Romanticism and more.
Tickets for non members cost $30.
Attendees are encouraged to bring up two pieces of jewellery which Benjamin will discuss in an open forum, providing the age, description and value of each item.
Benjamin's lecture is also at the Havelock North Function Centre. Tickets cost $20 for non members.
The lecture, "At The Sign of the Falcon: The Life & Works of Harry Murphy - Goldsmith, Silversmith and Unique Englishman", is about the life and works of H G Murphy, who died just before the start of World War II. He learned a wide range of skills and techniques, including enamelling, gem-setting and polishing.
