It's party time at Dannevirke's AMP Wai Splash pool on Sunday as the complex celebrates 20 years.

"We are celebrating with an open day, including sponsored free use of the facility for children and adults," Peter Wimsett of the Tararua District Council said.

"This 20th anniversary milestone is a major achievement for those involved with the pool, reflecting the strong community support over the years.

"This effort has been from the initial funding and building of the facility to the ongoing challenges of running the operations, with the benefits now experienced by a generation of people."

Mr Wimsett said the pool complex was a vital community asset which provided safety, education and promoted the healthy activity of swimming.

"Tararua Alliance are sponsoring the free use of the facility, with a free barbecue, use of the big blow-up toys and other fun family activities.

"We are anticipating continued good weather which will help to attract people to the celebration and we are expecting a large influx, including pool users.

"Caregivers are reminded they will still need to be present to look after young people and dependents."

Mr Wimsett said although Tararua Alliance was the major sponsor for the day, a number of other sponsors and volunteers, including trustees of the Tararua Aquatic Community Trust, had stepped up to support the event.

• Programme: 10am, complex opens, free entry; Inflatable toys inside and outside, Sammys coffee cart available for purchases outside the facility, Santa photos in tiger gazebo, Noon-1.30pm, sausage sizzle, 1pm, birthday cake, 1.30pm-2pm, lolly scramble, 3pm, outside toy closes down, 3.30pm, Santa photos close down, 5pm, complex closes.
