A man was caught driving at four times the legal alcohol limit.

A 33-year-old man was caught drunk and speeding by police near the Pekapeka wetlands.

He will face charges of drink-driving and dangerous driving in court this month, after he allegedly blew more than four times the legal limit last Thursday.

Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said a police officer spotted a vehicle travelling at 141km/h toward Hastings, south of the lime works, at about 4.50pm.

The vehicle was stopped in Hastings and the driver breath-tested.

The result meant an immediate 28-day suspension of the driver's licence.

Police are urging caution on Hawke's Bay roads and are encouraging people to speak up about bad drivers.

"If you are ever in a car and have concerns, say something about it to the driver," Senior Sergeant Brown said.

"Better to upset someone temporarily than deal with the consequences of a crash."

The accused man is due to appear in Hastings District Court on Monday, June 29.
