About 80 youngsters got a mainly triumphant introduction to fishing when they took part in Hawke's Bay Fish and Game's annual children's fishing programme at the Jervoistown game farm on Saturday.

Fish and Game regional manager Peter McIntosh said it was developed to get children "hooked" on fishing and promote the sport, outdoor recreation and conservation.

"A lot of them caught fish," he said. "Often this is a special thrill as it's the first fish the children have ever caught."

Napier and Hastings angling club members and other volunteers ran the programme, with one-to-one tuition, and the chance to catch a rainbow trout.
