A transformer failure in Rutherford Rd in Napier has left 76 customers without power.

Relationship Manager for Unison Danny Gough said it would be sometime before the power would be returned to people's homes.

"We've had a transformer failure in Rutherford Rd. The issue for us is that it's not an easy fix."

"We're pretty much going to have to remove that transformer, it's had quite a catastrophic failure within the fuse area."

Gough said crews were currently at the scene and were working as fast as they could to get the power back on.

"It's going to take sometime before we can restore power to some of those houses, it'll be four or five hours at least."

"It's affecting customers in Rutherford Rd, Barker Rd and a part of Douglas McLean Avenue. "

Gough said Unison appreciated the patience of customers and said crews hoped to get the power back on as soon as possible.
