Talented composer Marcus Jackson was another standout performer at the weekend competition - winning an award for the performance of his own composition and being selected to play the piece at the national competition in July.
Marcus, a Year 12 student at Lindisfarne College, wrote the composition Memoirs of a Forgotten Soul that won the original composition section of the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest.
He was up against 22 others for the prize, and will now perform the piece at the national final in Hamilton in July.
He will perform with fellow Lindisfarne College student, Brooks Kershaw (clarinet), who was in the same winning band, Ru-Tsu, at this year's Smokefreerockquest, and Napier Boys' High School pianist Jeremy Wood.
Marcus played the flute and piccolo during the performance, and this latest accolade adds to a number of other recent achievements for the young musician, including the Philharmonia Composition Competition and the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare music competition.
