Orbit Rock plays an epxerimental mix of cross-genre music.

Orbit Rock plays an epxerimental mix of cross-genre music.

Into Orbit doesn't play a rock show but rather looks to keep audiences entranced as they are taken on a psychedelic musical journey.

The experimental music duo from Wellington plays at The Cabana on Saturday as part of their national Dark Matter tour.

Drummer Ian Moir said the band won't wait for applause or take a break between songs. "We like to improvise our transitions, we don't break the fourth wall."

He said while they incorporate rock elements, their music is abstract, with long builds, sci-fi influence, geological titles and progressive messages.

"It's all about the journey."

The show is part of a tour in support of their upcoming single and video release for Dark Matter - an instrumental post-metal song with a unique and visually enthralling video clip.

Moir directed and edited the video, which begins in an atmospheric room and ends on the "majestic hills" of Titahi Bay.

"We hired a drone to get shots of us playing overlooking Mana Island. It was epic."

The band formed in 2013 in Wellington, a collaboration between guitarist Paul Stewart and Moir.

The two had played in several rock and metal bands together since 2009 before forming Into Orbit.

Mr Moir described their sound as running the gamut from post-rock and soundscape to metal, prog, noise and drone.

Often compared to post rock and progressive bands such as Jakob, Russian Circles, Tool and Pink Floyd, the duo has earned itself a reputation as one of Wellington's finest rock acts.

They self-recorded and independently released their debut album in August 2014 to favourable reviews and since then have been consistently performing around New Zealand, including several headlining tours and an opening slot for German prog metal act The Ocean.

They have now completed writing and recording a second full-length album, expected to be released on vinyl later this week.

The upcoming tour will include several tracks from this album, as well as a selection from their debut album Caverns.

Music critic Ricardo Kerr described their debut album as "completely beyond rock as we know it.

"This is pure head-space music, transporting you from your drab surroundings into the impossible cacophony of deep space," he said.

Cabana owner and renowned muso Roy Brown said Into Orbit (who have played at the venue several times) was one of the best things to come out of Wellington in a long time.

"They are a very clever original pop rock group," Mr Brown said.

He said the duo were building a steady following and expected a solid turnout for February's gig.

Mr Brown said January had been a good month for the Cabana and they had some great acts booked for the rest of the summer season.
