Øyawa

Øyawa

Waiheke three-piece Øyawa, pronounced oi-ah-wah, are set to release their debut EP, Won't Even Try To Scale It.

The indie/alternative trio have also released the video for the single Heads On Fire, which has had airplay on local student radio.

The distinctive drumming on the track is the work of Miles Gillett, who has played and toured with acts including Pavement, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fugazi and Dinosaur Jr.

The other two band members are songwriter and singer Nikki Ngatai and Wellingtonian Bret Garrity.

The EP will be released on June 24, but will only be available on CD at their two shows this month - June 25 at Artworks Theatre on Waiheke Island and June 30 at Whammy on Auckland's K Rd.

Intense noise merchants Jakob are bringing their wall of sound to a stage near you.

The Hawke's Bay trio, whose album Sines won the Taite Music Prize last year, have been touring the world, and are home to perform a series of shows through June, July and August in Wellington, Napier, Hamilton and Auckland.

Also in trio news, Bleached have announced a New Zealand show on the back of their album Welcome The Worms.

The band, sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin on vocals and guitar and Micayla Grace on bass, will play Auckland's Whammy Bar on October 5.

Tickets from Under The Radar and Flying Out.

Revisit a classic
The 1982 compilation Black Silk brought together the smoothest set of funk/soul songs in one place.

From The Manhattans' Kiss & Say Goodbye and Shining Star to Bill Wither's Ain't No Sunshine and Just The Two Of Us, Black Silk is perfect relaxation music.

Other highlights include The Isley Brothers' Summer Breeze and Billy Paul's Me And Mrs Jones, and you really can't go past the deep, deep tones of Lou Rawls on You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine and Lady Love.
