A Schubertiade - a concert dedicated to the music of Austrian composer Franz Schubert - will be held at 8pm on Tuesday, in the Century Theatre, Napier. It will be the perfect way to celebrate Chamber Music New Zealand's Diamond Anniversary - 60 years of classical music performance.
This will be
the first in a series of 10 concerts nationwide, featuring New Zealand's foremost pianist, Michael Houstoun, with the New Zealand String Quartet, violinists Helene Pohl, Douglas Beilman and Gillian Ansell, cellist Rolf Gjelste, plus double-bass player Michael Steer.
Schubertiades were informal events that grew from Schubert's love of poetry, song and friendship, and became popular during the composer's short life. They have continued to the present day with regular Schubertiade festivals and concerts worldwide.
The programme for the Schubertiade will include the Piano Quintet in A, The Trout, and the Notturno in E flat, as well as String Quartet No 15 in G.
The concert will coincide with the release of Staying in Tune: Chamber Music New Zealand at 60 - a publication written by Jane Dawson, looking back at the history of this country's largest presenter of top-quality chamber music.
