The Wairoa A&P Show starts today with horse class entries bucking a recent show trend by being the biggest for several years.
The increase stunned society secretary and equestrian events organiser Sue Wilson who yesterday had to arrange for stalls to be available at the nearby Te Kupenga Racecourse.
"It'sthe first time the show has had to do that for several years," she said before meeting Wairoa Racing Club president Paul Toothill at the racecourse, where the races will be held on February 20 and 23.
Late entries were being taken in some classes and Mrs Wilson said yesterday at least 260 riders would take part, when a week ago "more than 200" was the call.
She said the large entry was always welcome, but the stage had been reached where as well as the extra facilities being needed, there would be pressure on judges and other volunteers.
"I don't think we'd want to still be there judging at 7pm," she said. "It makes a long day."
Many of the riders have been attracted by what has become a five-day equestrian carnival, with local club dressage events yesterday preceding the three-day show, which will be followed on Sunday by the Wairoa ESNZ show jumping and show hunter competition.
The highlight of show events will be the Grand Prix pony and horse event on Saturday.
