Today, children and grandchildren of the fans who first heard those messages, are showing up at gigs.
"There's definitely old and young, it's really interesting to see the people our age and even kids in their 20s," Lundon said.
"I still love getting songs we have written out there and watching the punters enjoy themselves, I personally enjoy it because it's my own space where no one can tell me what to do."
In 2012, three decades after forming in a South Auckland garage, Herbs became the 11th act to be inducted into New Zealand's Music Hall of Fame.
While career highlights came thick and fast in the 1980s and '90s, recording an album with Jo Walsh of The Eagles fame and touring with Whitney Houston, Neil Young and UB40, all rated high for Lundon.
"They are all mates. They have become friends over the years, we have seen them more than once, especially UB40. I first met them in 1983 and we have kept in close contact."
Herbs will be reunited with UB40 frontman Ali Campbell at Raggamuffin Music Festival, to be held in Auckland in December.
"It always seems to happen, we sort of have this backstage banter."
Herbs unplugged format pulls the true essence of songs which made them famous such as Dragons & Demons Whats' Be Happen?, One Brotherhood and their tribute to Bob Marley Reggae's Doing Fine.
All the favourites feature on the group's current set list, and will be delivered with a heavy dose of Herbs character.
"I think we have changed over the years. We have gotten better, we are all a lot more mature. We don't get stage fright, it's more of a job."
The unplugged atmosphere made for a more laid-back vibe, but that's not to say they lack energy.
"With all the artists in the world looking to that more acoustic sound, it was a good time for us to do this. The enjoyment is there, the fun is there, it's just more hard case now, we laugh more."
• Herbs Unplugged will perform with special guests The Rude Boys at The Sideline Bar in Onekawa from 7pm on Saturday. General admission tickets are $20, available from eventfinder.co.nz
